Generic TLD Briefing · Sokomi
.yourindustry

Don't just exist in your industry.
Own the namespace.

A generic TLD lets you operate the definitive internet address for an entire industry, community, or category. You become the registry — the place where everyone in your space registers their online identity.

The next generation of internet real estate is opening up.

ICANN is opening applications for new generic Top-Level Domains for the first time in over a decade. This is your chance to apply to operate a TLD that serves an entire industry or community — and build a recurring revenue business from it.

You become the registry operator. Everyone else registers with you.

A generic TLD is an open namespace — like .shop, .app, or .music. You operate it, set the rules, set the pricing, and earn revenue every time someone registers or renews a domain name on it. Think of it as building and managing a neighbourhood that an entire community wants to live in.

The Business Model

Recurring revenue from every registration

Every domain registered under your TLD generates annual wholesale revenue. Premium domain names — short, desirable words — command higher one-time fees on top. As the namespace grows, so does a predictable, recurring revenue stream that compounds year over year.

Become the definitive address for your space

When you operate a TLD like .travel, .music, or .law, you become the trusted namespace for that entire industry. Every business, professional, and organisation in the space becomes a potential registrant — and you're the one who controls the front door.

Premium Domain Value

The best names command serious prices

Short, dictionary-word domains under a relevant TLD are high-value assets. As registry operator, you control the premium pricing strategy — releasing valuable names at launch, through auction, or via tiered pricing that reflects market demand.

Data & Insights

Understand what your industry is building

As registry operator, you see registration trends, category growth, and geographic patterns across the entire namespace. This data is commercially valuable — for partnerships, sponsorship, and strategic decision-making.

Trust & Governance

Set the rules for who gets in

You define the registration policies — whether the TLD is open to all or restricted to verified members of an industry or community. This governance layer creates trust and exclusivity, making the namespace more valuable to registrants.

Partnership & Sponsorship

A new channel for industry partnerships

Brands, associations, and organisations within the industry become natural partners — co-marketing the namespace, sponsoring premium launches, and integrating the TLD into their own digital strategies. The TLD becomes a shared industry asset.

Four revenue streams. One compounding asset.

A well-operated generic TLD generates revenue from multiple sources — all of which grow as the namespace gains adoption. Revenue composition varies by TLD, but successful generic registries typically see this blend by Year 3 of operation.

30 APRIL 2026
The application window opens this month.
ICANN opens its new TLD application round for the first time in over a decade. The last round was in 2012. There's no guarantee when the next one will be. This could be a once-in-a-generation opportunity.
WINDOW OPEN: 30 APR – 12 AUG 2026

From idea to live registry — a clear path.

You don't need to be a tech company to do this — but you do need specialist support. That's what Sokomi is here for. Here's what the road looks like.

  1. Now → Late April 2026

    Strategy & preparation

Sokomi helps you identify the right TLD string, assess market demand, build the business case, and prepare the full ICANN application. We handle the technical partner selection and financial modelling.

  2. 30 April 2026

    Application window opens

You have until 12 August to submit. The total application fee is $227,000 per string — the entry cost for owning a permanent piece of internet infrastructure.

  3. August 2026

    Window closes

No late entries. If you're not in, you wait for the next round — which could be another 10+ years away.

  4. Late 2026

    Evaluation

ICANN reviews all applications. Contention sets are identified if multiple parties applied for the same string. Sokomi supports you through review, clarification, and any challenge processes.

  5. Mid-2027

    Delegation & launch

Once approved, your TLD goes live. Sunrise period for trademark holders, then general availability. Registration revenue begins from Day 1 of general availability.
